You’d think we’d be dieting pros by now. There are countless experts telling you they know the secret to getting slim by eating this or avoiding that. And then there’s the old “calories in versus calories out” equation that seems so simple at the surface, but is much harder when put in practice. And with 45 million Americans dieting each year and most people failing at those diets, there much be so much more going on underneath the calls to snack on kale chips and forget the calls of Little Debbie.
Weight Loss Timeline
Week 1 - Your body adjusts to its new calorie and nutrient intake. If you have excluded things like sugar and white flour from your diet, you may feel symptoms of withdrawal like headaches, brain fog, and fatigue. But don’t worry, this only lasts a few days.
Weeks 2-3 - You start to feel better. You have more energy, you are more alert, and you may not need as many coffees as you did before. Some of you may already notice your clothes getting a bit looser.
Weeks 4-6 - For all that were worried about the scale not moving, this is the point where you start to see it move in the right direction.
2 months - For any of you that started out with high cholesterol, high fasting glucose, or triglycerides, lab tests during this time may show improved levels of all of the above markers.
3 months - At this point, you may start to actually see the difference your body is making. This is the best motivation anyone could ask for.
4-5 months - At this point, you may consider that the healthy changes you are making could actually turn into a lifestyle.
6 months - Congratulations! You have reached half a year of eating healthily and exercising. By now you should be feeling and looking great. For many, this may be the point where a doctor could lessen the amount of medications you take as your health is improving.
1 year - By now, you have embedded a healthy diet and fitness program into your lifestyle. Your old self with your not-so-healthy habits just seem like a bad dream or thing of the past. Your body looks and feels wonderful. For many of you, you still have work ahead, but reaching this point is a good indication that there is no going back.
