However, when you are trying to change your lifestyle, going out is a normal part of life that shouldn’t be avoided. Instead of choosing to stay in, here are 3 things that will help you stay on track when you eat out.
PLAN AHEAD - As with other aspects of eating healthily, dining out is no exception to planning ahead. If you know the restaurant you will be going to, check out their menu on-line before you go and choose what you will eat. This way, you won’t be tempted to indulge once hunger sets in.
ASK FOR CHANGE - Not satisfied that your piece of grilled chicken comes with French Fries? Not sure what was used in cooking your favorite dish? Don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions and what is in your food. You have every right to ask. Ask for salad dressings and heavy creams on the side, substitute fried for baked, broiled, or grilled, and always include a vegetable or salad dish with your meal for added fiber and nutrient density.
SAVE YOUR DESSERT FOR LATER - If you really want to treat yourself when you go out, don’t eat dessert immediately after a meal. The surge of sugar in addition to what you have already eaten signals your body to immediately store fat. Order your dessert and ask to have it wrapped so that you can take it home. Waiting a few hours to eat it will help your body process it.
